Now in its 10th year, The Armory Show is the Babylonian beast of the international art fairs, almost a giant traveling circus museum. With more than 50 000 visitors, about 160 of the world’s leading galleries, its fresh-from-the-studio art by over 2000 artists, it offers a hugely entertaining look at new currents in art, cynical snapshots of the market, and a lot of schmoozing… So adjust your social autopilot and scan the room : strolling down the aisles is a cute and tiny Katelijne De Backer, the Armory Show executive Director, greeting VIPs in a flattering dandyish suit, a dressed down but slightly tanned and well-moisturized Terence Koh, trying not to air kiss a fellow punk artist, a stunning Nicola Vassel, Deitch Projects Gallery Director, in her high-waisted Chanel man pants, and the always chic Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn, Salon 94 owner and renowned collector, in her black YSL jumpsuit, talking to some gypsy glam art funder in fur, and of course all the regulars : Miami collectors Mera and Donald Rubell, New York collectors Susan and Michael Hort, collector and art publisher Peter Brant, and many more, John Waters, Easy Rider Dennis Hopper, Adrian Brody, some ThreeAsFour guys etc. The Armory aisles are veritable schmoozefests… Lets not forget we’re in New York, home to more collectors, galleries, critics and artists than any other city…
