Capture du 2015-05-05 11:37:24We used to be so close…France and the United States…It’s been 230 years since Lafayette came to your assistance and we’ve had a long and passionate relationship since…though sometimes recently the Atlantic seemed a very cold and wide wall separating us… But there were always some who never forgot how our histories are intertwined. There were some who were never closed their eyes and ears, but listened and heard and were inspired by all that happens on either side of the ocean. Art and artists, music, creation….all reinventing themselves and speaking in a new, international language, with passion and clarity about what we are and how much we’ve learned from each other. Art…bridging the ocean between us now that the Concorde is gone – Art…bringing us together when we have been deceived by both politics and economics… Building a tunnel between our two continents… Where do we find the roots of the “free spirit” Europeans love so much in the US if not in the hearts and minds of Old World artists and philosophers…and all those immigrants seeking a new « independence »? Today, the spirit that joined us may have lost its splendor, but the common blood and ideas that link the USA and France are still present. As we witness what seems false melt away, isn’t this the moment to re-assert what remains unchanging, the true gold in our common heritage? Somewhere in the writings of de Tocqueville he says that « History is an art gallery filled with paintings, few original, many copies”. More than ever, we need to tell the difference between what is real, and what is fake…we need – more than ever – our artists. Our planet continues to turn round and round, the winds that brought US independence are still here to be breathed in today…it is time to open a dialogue again between us…or realize there is one that has never ended… Yes, the world turns, the winds blow from east to west….We need to listen again to what those winds are telling us… Art and artists – to paraphrase General Pershing when he arrived to help France in 1917 – : “NOUS VOILA !”

“THE TIME TO START WORK ON ALL OF THESE ISSUES IS NOW. LET’S FACE IT. WE ARE NOT IN A TEMPORARY ECONOMIC LULL, AN ORDINARY RECESSION,
FROM WHICH WE WILL EMERGE TO RETURN TO BUSINESS-AS USUAL. WE ARE AT THE BEGINNING OF A LONG, PROFOUND, PAINFUL PROCESS OF CHANGE.
OF IRREVERSIBLE CHANGE. FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE. WE NEED TO START THINKING AND ACTING ACCORDINGLY.”
